The APSN 16th Annual Meeting concluded in Perth, Western Australia with a strong sense of collaboration and progress.

Emphasis on lifecycle nuclear material management and the importance of early planning to reduce regulatory burdens.

IAEA Updates
Insightful briefings on global challenges and emerging technologies like SMRs and AMRs.

Women in Safeguards Panel
A landmark moment for APSN, spotlighting the importance of gender equity, institutional support, and inclusive workplace practices.

Tour of the IAEA NWAL laboratory at University of Western Australia
Opportunity to see the valuable contribution that UWA makes to nuclear safeguards.

Working Group Achievements
WG1: Presented and endorsed the APSN Good Practices Guide.
WG2: Announced training programs for 2026 to support nuclear newcomers.
WG3: Explored strategic communications and website improvements.
WG4: Shared nuclear accounting tools and SMR regulatory insights.
WG5: Addressed outreach to small quantity nuclear material holders and legacy material safeguarding.
 

We welcomed Laos, PNG, Fiji and Timor-Leste as observers, along with the IAEA. The Good Practices Guide will be submitted to the IAEA for distribution.

Looking ahead, Australia will host APSN 2026, with a proposed date in the week of 30 November 2026. We also look forward to APSN’s contribution to the IAEA Safeguards Symposium.
